Ideas are percolating, even before you've made the coffee.
While fresh new directions are delightful little tours of the imagination, I like travelling the old back roads currently, revisiting old haunts and familiar sites, hoping to see something I hadn't noticed before.
Yes, I am in rewriting mode.
You may only appreciate this when you have read through your spec a few dozen times. The jokes are old, and the story is achingly the same. But you keep returning to it, for you need to get past this boring stage to test if it can be revitalized again with some fresh detail.
I write to get it sold, and I rewrite to get it appreciated. I never forget to be aware this is a collaborative effort. For while I work on these specs as a solitary endeavour, most screenwriters work on an assigned basis, ready to see a shared vision. Rewriting helps me to understand collaboration--even it's only with myself.
Carpe diem.
